There's something about this song that makes me happy. It has perspective. It makes you think. It's funny. It reminds you to be HAPPY about being alive. It's just all 'round awesome, really.

----
Galaxy Song by Monty Python
Whenever life gets you down Mrs. Brown
And things seem hard or tough
And people are stupid, obnoxious or daft
And you feel that you've had quite enough...

Just, remember that you standing on a planet that’s evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour
It’s orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it’s reckoned
A sun that is the source of all our power

The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm at forty thousand miles an hour
Of the galaxy we call the Milky Way

Our galaxy itself, contains a hundred billion stars
It’s a hundred thousand light years side-to-side
It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick
But out by us it just three thousand light years wide

We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point
We go round every two hundred million years
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions in this amazing and
expanding universe

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whiz
As fast as it can go, the speed of light you know
Twelve million miles a minute and that’s the fastest speed there is
So remember when you’re feeling very small and insecure
How amazingly unlikely is your birth
And pray that there’s intelligent life somewhere up in space
Cause there’s bugger-all down here on Earth

---

First off: so much LOL at the ending.

secondly:
So remember when you’re feeling very small and insecure
How amazingly unlikely is your birth
So very true and something we could all stand to remember more often, I think!

I'm not very eloquent these days. I'm hardly literate at all, I think. I want to be all wise and philosophical and entertaining in my journal entries, but I don't think I'm kidding anyone and least of all myself. My brain is just too fried lately.

Though I have to say it sort of pisses me off when people have the audacity to call students lazy and especially this time of year. Okay, so there are people who don't take it seriously at all and I realise these are probably very visible where they rave around drunk throughout May. But take a trip up to the unis and you'll find almost every available surface occupied by students who sit there from morning till night. They go home, try to sleep and they come back to uni the next morning to do it all over again. Weekends? No such thing. Holidays in May? No such thing. It's all the same these days. It doesn't matter if it's Saturday or Sunday, people still have to read for hours on end. And then when they're finally done they go home for the Summer to work their summer jobs day in and day out so they can afford livingarrangements at uni the rest of the year. Show me anyone else who does this. I'm just saying.

I had pretty physical labour for a couple of summers while working at a nursing home, and don't get me wrong... it's hard work and you get very physically tired, especially after many days in a row at work. And at one point I worked every day for 14 days, and that's more than a 100% employee does. But nothing - nothing - makes me as tired as weeks on end with trying to cram your head with knowledge 6-10 hours a day.

Okay, I didn't even come here to rant. heh.
I come bringing a song, because...well...I feel like it.
It's a recording I did of Autumn Leaves done some months back.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2UZELDD3

Eurovision: It's a cracktastic glamfest. Not a political arena.

People are so ridiculous when it comes to Eurovision. It's for fun. If you win, great. If you lose, who the fuck cares. It's disappointing for an hour and then life goes on. It's a 'song contest' where it usually just comes down to what catches people attention, not necessarily what's the best composition etc. Sure, the artist may be a good singer, but if the song doesn't stick out in a good way it's not going to get any votes. That's just how it works. People like what they like, and you can't change that.

It annoys the crap out of me that after every Eurovision the sore losers pop out screaming about how ~political~ it is. For years now, British people have been doing this all over youtube and other places. "OMG it's so political. Everyone hates us cause we're so involved in Iraq! That's why we get no points."

WUT?! Who watches Eurovision and thinks about who's involved in Iraq and not?
Newsflash, guys. The reason UK did poorly for a while was that they sent CRAP. In 2003 they sent a duo of some sort that was supposed to be singing, I suppose, but it was so off key it was a suffering to listen to. In 2006 they sent an old guy rapping in a pretend classroom and some kids yelling the chorus at the top of their lungs. It was the most ridiculous thing I'd ever seen.

And this year, it's the Greek complaining all over the internet. Clearly, it's all political because Greece clearly had the best song and everyone else is just voting strategically.
What the frack kind of political reason is there to not vote for Greece anyway?! "I hate your ancient buildings and your party beaches, 0 votes from me!!"

I can tell you the reason Greece didn't win or get higher up: It was a crappy, repetitive song with the chorus running over and over again, sung by a sleezy looking guy who ripped up his shirt so we got a 'wonderful' male nippleslip. The choreography consisted of him dryhumping an imaginary pole, walking on a threadmill and jumping off it ever 5 seconds.

It's not political, it's called different tastes. People, it's EUROVISION. No one cares about politics when they watch a stupid song contest. Just because one country thinks their song is good, doesn't mean it'll strike a chord with the rest of the countries. And let's face it, much of the so-called block voting comes from the fact that the countries have similar cultures and some of the same people are celebrities in these countries and they speak similar languages. This is only natural, though can be abit annoying.

So, please, internet. Chill out. It's Eurovision. It's a song contest on crack that we all watch for the lulz, and whichever song wins is usually a song that is just catchy or caught people's attention somehow. We all know this isn't a superserious contest based on merit and actual talent.

And for the record: Norway holds the record for most last places and most 0 points in Eurovision, so I know what I'm talking about here. :P

Trying to sort out my thoughts regarding the master thesis

I've come to the point where I need to actually start figuring out what to write my masters thesis on. I need to pick the general area before June, because I need to take a masterscourse on the area this fall and it needs to be registered before June 1st. So, there was an info meeting today and I was hoping it'd clear some things for me, but it didn't really. I need to try and sort out the thoughts I have for all the areas:

Linguistics:
+ Contrasting Norwegian and English syntax can help me in the teaching of English to Norwegian students
+ If I choose to contrast Norwegian and English syntax, that's a very neglected field and I can actually contribute with something helpful.
+ A couple of the suggested problems caught my interest.
+ It's definitely a challenge.
- It hasn't been a field of interest for me and I'm afraid I'm going to start hating it once I really have to start doing this
- Due to it not being a field of particular interest, I haven't actually done much more than enough to get by. I have a B and a C in my linguistic subjects, so I don't know if I'm actually good enough to pull this off.
- It may be too much of a challenge :P I can't make a fool of myself and just fuck everything up on my master thesis.

Translation:
+ Annjo presented some good examples on problems to bring up and some of them caught my eye. A lot of them could be interesting to look at. Like, subtitling and dubbing.
+ Annjo would be a really good supervisor, I think. She has great knowledge, but she also seems like the person who goes to extra lengths for the students.
- Even though some of the examples caught my eye, I know this field actually bores me to tears. I don't get the point with translation theory, really, and I don't think I could write a 40 page paper and do all the required research, just cause I don't know if I really see the point.
- I don't know how relevant it'd be for me out in the work life, unless I brought in some didactic features.

Language acquisition:
+ Very, very relevant for me as a teacher.
- despite this it's a field that doesn't really interest me at all. Even if it should.
- none of the supervisors really struck me as someone I'd want to work with.
- I feel that, even if it's very relevant for me as a teacher, it feels a bit narrow. I'd like to have in-depth knowledge about more than just the technical aspect of teaching someone an L2.

Civilisation:
+ Interesting field, though can be complicated. It does interest me, though.
+ Guri suggested a while ago that I could look at political aspects in The Simpsons, and for some reason this really struck a chord with me. I love the idea. The problem is that it may actually be too big. I'd have to pick out just a few episodes, cause I can't do the span of the entire 20 seasons.
- They have a huge lack of supervisors in this and that worries me. I feel like I need someone who has the time and will to help me along.
- Other than The Simpsons idea I can't really think of anything I'd really want to write about. I'm doing that 25 page paper on the US and its relationship with the UN Security Council and it kind of makes me weep, in all honesty.

Literature:
+ It's the field I've been planning to do all along.
+ It's interesting and I feel I have the skills needed to pull it off and I feel like if I pick something under literature I'm guaranteed to pull through somehow.
+ Having a lot of knowledge in literature will pay off when teaching English, since analysing literature is a big part of the curriculum higher up in the system.
- Is there anything in literature that hasn't been done a bajillion times before? I don't want to just reproduce what other people have done 90 000 times before me.
- The field is huge and they didn't give any specific examples for me to work from, so I'm not sure where to even start finding something to work with. I don't want to do the really generic things, like Jane Austen. What can I possibly say about Jane Austen that hasn't been said by everyone evar?

I can't believe that linguistics is actually standing out a bit clearer at the moment. it's insane. It's the one thing I haven't wanted to do, ever. Plus, I'm kind of scared of going there cause I'm worried I don't have the amount of knowledge I need to really do research on something and actually come to good conclusions.

Literature is still sort of my plan, though, but I keep getting stuck on where to actually take it. I want to do something that can stand out a bit, not a thesis that just reproduces everything else written about the subject.

Okay, it was good to sort the thoughts out, at least. If anything, I see now that language acquisition is completely out of the question.

You probably cry at movies, which is fine if they are those kind of movies. You, on the other hand, may cry at -most- movies. Wearing your emotions on your sleeves is not always a good thing. You're also probably a bit of a pussy, but that's okay, the world needs peace-makers.

Now that we've got that out of the way, on to the good news.. You're probably the nicest person you know. Always going out of your way to help friends and strangers alike, you're a very compassionate and giving individual. You are idealistic, and perhaps live in your head a bit more than reality. You've probably been accused of seeing the world through rose colored glasses, and you're not at all put off by that. You are an excellent communicator, and most of the time people know how you're feeling. Your nurturing tendencies make it easy for your to attract and maintain friends. You're also probably a bit of a romantic, and people like that you are and upbeat and expressive person.

Idealist Traits:

Relates well with others

Friendly

Optimistic

Peace-maker/mediator

sensitive to others

Empathetic

Imaginitive

Inspirational

Animated

Expressive

Persuasive

Enthusiastic

team-player

Take True Colors Test - A Self Inventory at HelloQuizzy

You're probably also a talker, making sure to let everyone know about your feelings.
I couldn't sleep tonight. Really. I haven't slept at all. I went to bed at 5 AM (yes, I know >.<) and turned around fitfully for a couple of hours. And then I realised it was no use, got up and took a shower and watched Gilmore Girls until the present time. Lunch in half an hour and class after that, so I can't sleep now even if I'm getting tired.

Over two hours of turning and being as awake as ever lead me to rather strange topics of thought, though. I had a couple of realisations...

Numero uno. Do you guys realise how many kids we'll have running around some years from now actually named Twilight?
"Her name is Twilight!"
"Ah, my favourite time of day."
"No, from the book."
"Right..."

Not to mention all the Edwards. Oh, the Edwards :( You thought the cropping up of Lunas would be bad? Just you wait. Edward is going to be the new Lucas. I don't know about you guys, but in Norway every other kid is named Lucas these days. I blame One Tree Hill. Or whatever it is that has Lucases.

zwei. Can you imagine how the internet would have been if it had been more common in the late 80s/early 90s? Do you guys realise how much more crazy fanfiction there would have been? And the fanfiction scene is weird enough as it is. There are currently 205 fanfics on Beverly Hills 90210 on fanfiction.net, but imagine the numbers if internet was as easily accessible as it is now.

Okay, guys, I think I'm going to die laughing at the moment.
Did you realise there are currently 410 (?!) works of fanfiction on the TV-show Bonanza. While indeed a fabulously old wild west-y TV show, the thought of there being fanfiction amuses me to GREAT lengths. I wonder if Little Joe ever gets a girl who doesn't die in fanfiction.
Ah, this takes me back! To weekends, 10 o'clock in the mornings, Bonanza and my mother (right on time after Lassie) and no school.

Holy crap.
There's adult Touched by an Angel fanfiction.
So wrong. So very, very wrong D:

In every batch there's a secret about obesity and that aggravating argument comes up in every one. And the annoying thing is that every extreme is just as annoying as the other one.

Person 1: "OBESITY IS BEAUTIFUL AND COMPLETELY NORMAL AND WE SHOULD ALL THINK THEY LOOK STUNNING!"
Person 2: "Listen, fuckwit, obesity is disgusting to everyone because it means the THING is an unhealthy gross specimen that needs to start walking their fatass PAST McDonald's! EW!"

Okay, let me break this down now...
1. Obesity is not normal. It's named obesity because it isn't normal. if it was normal, it would be called normal. Being overweight is not the current standard of beauty, but that doesn't mean that no one will find an obese person beautiful. Still, you can't expect everyone to find it stunning simply because it's not the standard of our time.

2. No one will argue that obesity in itself isn't a healthrisk. Because it is. That does not mean, however, that all obese people lead unhealthier lifestyles than some skinny people do. People needs to stop assuming that a thin person automatically exercieses more, eats healthier and leads a more active lifestyle than someone overweight, because that's simply not true. My cousin is a skinny asshat, but he eats junkfood like no tomorrow. He doesn't lead a healthy life. He barely moves. Yet, people will automatically think that he's healthier than an overweight person. He's not.
Newsflash of the month: A bigmac has just as many calories, fats and carbs and is equally unhealthy to a skinny person and an overweight person.

Point is: No, obesity is not normal. No, we can't expect everyone to find it the most beautiful thing in the world. Yes, being overweight is a healthrisk in itself. But being skinny or normal does not necessarily mean you lead a healthier lifestyle. When you see an overweight person on the street they might already have lost 20 pounds and lead a healthy lifestyle. When you see an overweight person at McDonald's it may be the first time they eat there that year - you don't automatically know they eat there three times a day. If you see a skinny person jog one morning it might be the first time in their lifes. YOU DON'T KNOW.

No matter if you find overweight people pretty or not, there should be enough respect there to not assume things you know nothing about and enough respect to keep your opinions of their attractiveness or lack thereof to yourself.

I.
I found out that threadless had a holiday sale, so I bought 1 1/2 christmas presents there last night. I got two shirts for my brother, one to put in with the rest of my mum's present and I also got one for myself for good measure. Shipping ended up being expensive, though. Which sucked. Would've been very cheap if it hadn't been. But 4 t-shirts and shipping still only mounted to 70$ cause I got 5$ off as a holiday gift, apparently. Nice threadless people :)

II.
Twilight has eaten my life. Why did I ever buy that book? I decided to buy it Monday cause I felt like I couldn't enjoy the craziness that is the movie and Robert's fangirls without reading the book, plus I figured I could sit there mocking the fangirls while reading it, so it seemed like a good idea at the time.

To a cerain degree, it turned out to be everything I expected. Mary Sue fic published. The writing isn't particular good in any sense, and the dialogue especially sucks ass. There's 4 pages of Edward being all: "I'm dangerous!" ... "or am I?" And did I mention the Mary Sue factor? Are there any guys who aren't falling around Bella's feet?

BUT I CAN'T PUT IT DOWN! WHY?! I read it in two days. And right now I'm almost strappign myself to the chair so I won't go buy New Moon. I'll probably end up with it in my hands before the day is over, though.
The thing is, sometimes I sit there rolling my eyes and bitching about what happens/what's said in the book, and yet I have to read more!
WHAT KIND OF EVIL IS THIS?!

III.
Uni needs to die. Just saying

edit:
What the hell. <lj:music>Coldplay - 42</lj:music>

I know it's not cred to like Coldplay anymore. What is now cred and popular is to be all 'omgz Coldplay is FAIL, y'all'. And I haven't even liked Coldplay that much before. But Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends is a damn amazing album. I love the stringarrangement on it, but I'm a string-lover in general considering I've played the violin for 12ish years.

I'm sitting here trying not to seat-dance too much and bring attention to myself. I failed a moment ago and I got some strange looks.
But seriously. I'm supposed to be writing my paper and it's not going so well.

Instead I sat here realising that Coldplay's song 42 should be my theme-song! For obvious reasons. And besides the obvious reasons it should be my theme-song because it's awesome and the lyrics are:

You didn’t get to heaven
But you made it close,

Which is what I suspect is my fate. I'm going to make it damn close, though, I'm sure. It'd be just my luck.

Oh dear Merlin, what you do to avoid working on papers.
